Sample Case Intro:

The year is 2014, and the new owners of the Ketroit Kars basketball team are contemplating the team’s future in the city of Ketroit. John Smith, the team’s legendary owner, led the organization for nearly 50 years before passing away in 2013. It was a significant loss to the community as he was a respected businessman, passionate owner, and generous philanthropist. The Smith family’s heirs were not interested in running the organization, for personal reasons, and decided to sell the team. After a bidding war amongst multiple parties, the team was sold to a group of investors. Owned by activist investor Luke Rodgers, the leading hedge fund bought the team for $1.6 billion Dollars. Rodgers had built a reputation for acquiring struggling organizations through his hedge fund, commercializing them with direct management, activist investing methods, and reselling at a higher value. The Kars acquisition was Rodgers’ first acquisition in the sports and entertainment industry. Fans and the general public heavily scrutinized the decision as they feared Rodgers would emphasize economic value over team success and fan happiness. The team’s new management hired Goodman Consulting Association LLP - a small yet prestigious consulting firm from Canada – to create a roadmap solving various problems the organization faces. Specifically, the team is looking to receive suggestions on improving profitability, attendance, market value, and team success.
HISTORY:
Over the 2021/2022 school year, the Goodman Consulting Association introduced the ‘Think Like a Consultant Bootcamp’ workshop series. This series allowed students to explore different areas of consulting, practice skills commonly used in consulting, and work with other students to problem-solve a consulting case.
